UNICEF’s Office of Innovation focuses on identifying, prototyping and scaling open source solutions that improve children’s access to information, opportunity and choice. Divided into three teams, the Office focuses on (1) Ventures: engagement with and prototyping of early-stage technology solutions; (2) Futures: engagement with the tech sector to shape products and services that can bring results for children and (3) Scale-up: integration of proven technology solutions into UNICEF’s core programming.

UNICEF Venture’s strategy includes scale-up of the Innovation Fund – the Fund allows UNICEF to quickly assess, fund and scale open-source solutions that address the most pressing challenges facing children. With $9m available in funding for the Innovation Fund, the Innovation Unit is scaling up investments significantly. Starting 1 February 2016, the Innovation Fund launched its first call for expressions of interest from external applicants in UNICEF’s programme countries. In addition, the Innovation Fund will continue to accept applications from UNICEF Country Offices for co-funding from the Innovation Fund. The current portfolio of 21 internal investments will significantly grow as more applications are received and funding granted.

Under the guidance and direct supervision of the Senior Adviser on Innovation to the Executive Director, the Deputy & Innovation Fund Manager leads the implementation and management of all activities related to the Innovation Fund and provides support to the Senior Adviser for strategic decisions, team and budget management of the Unit. The Innovation Fund Manager also supervises the team of consultants contracted to support various short-term needs of the Innovation Fund (e.g. Innovation Fund Analyst), works in close collaboration with other sections and teams within the Office of Innovation and acts as a primary contact point for relevant donors, partners and other internal units and divisions. UNICEF Ventures constitutes one of three teams under the Office of Innovation, directed by the Director of Innovation.
