Singularity University Lab Lead and Partnership and Event Coordinator

Innovation Unit, Division of Policy and Strategy, UNICEF

Duration of Contract: 8 months

Duty Station: San Francisco, California

Background

With the unprecedented growth of the technology sector, Silicon Valley is emerging as a new thought partners and investor in philanthropy and international development. As UNICEF looks towards engaging partners, donors, and supporters in high-growth transformative industries and new demographics that can help deliver results for children, we must not only work with the technology sector but also look to influence their investments to bring about the best results for children.

UNICEF’s work to develop and expand partnerships with the technology industry to strengthen results for children requires support in 3 areas:

  1. Coordination of UNICEF’s Singularity University Lab activities
  2. Organization of Bay Area ‘Activate’ events: Doing Good is Good Business: The Business Case for Social Good
  3. Support to Bay Area partnership development

Activities

Coordination of UNICEF’s Singularity University Lab activities

  • Work with Singularity University staff and other partners in the Innovation Exchange program to structure the collaboration between corporate partners and the other UNICEF Innovation labs
  • Hold office hours once a month (when teams available) and connect SU UNICEF lab to other UNICEF labs and other parts of the organization as appropriate
  • Design UNICEF’s engagement in SU’s executive program, including establishment of partnerships within SU network and Corporate Innovation Exchange
  • Fundraise for the SU UNICEF lab activities

Organization of Bay Area ‘Activate’ events: Doing Good is Good Business: The Business Case for Social Good

  • Coordinate partner engagement around the 4 events
  • Coordinate write up and design publications of events
  • Oversee venue, partner inputs, and design of the events
  • Offer support for any smaller events associated with UNICEF Innovation
  • Map partnerships opportunities and influencers in the space

Support to Bay Area partnership development

  • Support the initiation of new forms of mutually beneficial collaborations between UNICEF, other international organizations, corporations, academia, investors, start-ups in the Bay Area as well as young entrepreneurs in the field.
  • Coordinate with UNICEF innovation leads, the Nairobi Innovation Centre, and relevant parts of UNICEF and the US Fund to help find and develop partnerships in the area of design and technology for development.
  • Support the development of an academic program/course/model, similar to the Design for UNICEF class at NYU

Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in relevant field of international development, public health, public policy, and or communications
  • Proven communication and partnership ability
  • Deep understanding of and experience with the technology sector and Silicon Valley
  • Understanding of mobiles and technology for development
  • Experience in working with technology companies, start ups, social enterprises and foundations
  • 10+ years relevant experience
  • Relevant network in the Bay Area, familiarity with tech and social good industries
